A very good full leather binding with gilt label to front board. 4to. 12.50" x 10.25" x 1.75". Unpaginated. Polished black morocco over thick boards. Corners bumped. Front board with dulled gilt label: "The United Parishes Of S. Margaret Lothbury, S. Christopher Le Stocks, S. Bartholomew By The Exchange." Spine with 5 raised bands and dulled gilt title: "Common Prayer". All page edges gilt (now a little dulled), Original yellow endpapers soiled. Light spotting to free-endpapers. Title-page in red & black. Clear English text throughout in double columns. Each page within a red-lined border. Pages refering to Morning and Evening Prayer soiled due to previous regular use. With 4 black silk marker ribbons. A very good 19th century parayer book with an interesting provenance. ** "St Christopher le Stocks was a parish church on the south side of Threadneedle Street in the Broad Street Ward of the City of London. Of Medieval origin, it was rebuilt following the Great Fire of London in 1666, but demolished to make way for an extension of the neighbouring Bank of England. The parish was united with that of St Margaret Lothbury in 1781, and the church pulled down the next year. In 1839 Saint Bartholomew by the Exchange was added when its church was also demolished. ".

The Book of Common Prayer, ornamented with woodcuts from designs of Albert Durer, Hans Holbein, and others : In imitation of Queen Elizabeth's Book of Christian Prayers. A very good early quarter calf binding. 8vo. 7.5" x 5.0" x 1.25". Dark brown morocco spine with gilt titles, over marbled boards. Corners rounded. Plain endpapers. Loosely inserted type-written note dated Jan 26, 1942 relating to the previous owner, on headed paper (25, Park Town, Oxford.) signed by Bryce McMaster. Decorated title in red & black. Verso with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth at prayer. Every page with decorated border illustrated with designs after Albert Durer, Hans Holbein, and others. Bound in black goatskin over bevelled boards, the covers with raised compartments, tooled in blind, with central cross. Spine with four raised bands, blind stamped decorated compartments and gilt title: "Common Prayer". Inner gilt dentelles, with yellow endpapers. All page edges gilt (rubbed). Light soiling to free-endpapers. Separate title-page: "A New Version of the Psalms of David by N Tate and N Brady.." un-dated . Clear text throughout on lightly toned paper. Husband of Blanche Wilhelmina Dorothea (Annesley) Nicholson — married 1 Jun 1892 in Bareilly, Bengal, India. Father of Geoffrey Nicholson. Died 13 Jun 1942 at age 79 in Winchester, Hampshire, England . He was educated at Mr Ratcliffe's School at 42 Sandgate Rd, Folkestone and later at Sandhurst Military Academy. By 1887 he was serving in India as a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion The Hampshire Regiment. He married Blanche Dorothea Annesley at Bareilly, Bengal on 1 June 1892. By 1901 he was serving in Ireland. On 14 January 1916 he was gazetted temporary Brigadier General. A photograph from 1917 is available in the National Portrait Gallery. **** H.F.N. is believed to be Henry Frederick Nicholson born on 24 October 1835, brother of William Smith Nicholson and a Navy Captain.

A very good prayer book previously in the personal collection of Gerald Chippindale Rivington. Small 4to. 7.75" x 7.25" x 1.25". No pagination (but estimated to be 560 pages). A very good black leather binding over thick boards, with two outer-corner brass clasps and hasps (in working order). Also, elaborate brass initials: "I.H.S." to front board. Hinges carefully strengthened. Spine with 4 raised bands and dulled gilt title: "Common Prayer". All page edges bright gilt. Marbled endpapers. Large armorial bookplate to front endpaper: "Gerald Chippindale Rivington". Engraved title-page, followed by a printed title-page in red & black. Plus further 6 engraved title-pages to each section. Each page of text in red & black with an ornate decorated border. A very good English prayer book in a gothic style binding. * Date of publication based on the earliest date in the table of movable feasts. ** "..at the time of its sale to Longmans in 1890, the Rivington publishing business was the oldest continuously existing publishers in Britain. Moreover, as the printing firm Gilbert and Rivington survived until 1907 while the publishing firm Rivington & Co. VG. ** " Lady Emily Hay, Lady Peel (1836 – 23 April 1924) was the daughter of George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale and of Lady Susan Montagu (18 September 1797 – 5 March 1870). One of ten siblings, she was born in Yester, East Lothian, Scotland and baptised there on 28 February 1837. On 13 January 1856, she married Sir Robert Peel, 3rd Baronet, the eldest son of prime minister Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet. Their twin daughters Gwendolin Cecilia and Agnes Helen (1860–1964) were born in 1860, followed by Victoria Alexandrina Julia (1865–1935), Robert (1867–1925) and Evelyn Emily (1869–1960). On 9 May 1895, aged 73, her husband was found dead, from haemorrhage on the brain, in his bedroom at 12 Stratton Street, London. He was buried at Drayton-Bassett parish church on 16 May. Their only son Robert succeeded in the baronetcy. Lady Peel was interested in dog racing and bred several award-winning borzoi. French Rosarian François Lacharme named a rose cultivar after her. He married Lady Jane Lennox, daughter of Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond on 20 July 1822.
